Rinne was spectacular, turning aside 35 shots for the shutout and outdueling Lundqvist, who made 35 saves as well. Johnson’s second of the season, 1:03 into the game put PU ahead, and Backstrom’s shorthanded goal less than eight minutes later proved to be all they would need.
At Lombard 5, El Paso 3
Eriksson completed his hat trick with a pair of goals 1:54 apart in the third period to snap a 3-3 tie and earn two points for the Lightning. Ryan scored the lone goal of the first period, and Berglund tied the game with his first of the year midway through the second period. Enstrom converted a power play opportunity and Eriksson scored to make it 3-1 Lombard heading to the third period. Zajac and Sharp scored in the first five minutes of the third to tie the game at three before Eriksson took matters into his own hands. Zetterberg and Marc Staal each assisted on two of Eriksson’s goals.
At CHA 4, Manitoba 2
Foligno scored twice and Ward made 36 saves to earn the win for the league leading Cougar. Foligno scored the lone goal of the first period. Daniel Sedin, who notched a team-high nine shots on goal, scored to tie the game, and after Gilbert and Gaborik traded goals, Foligno scored his second of the game with 44 seconds remaining in the period to break the deadlock. Malkin tipped in a Bouwmeester point drive on the power play midway through the third for an insurance marker.
